PROBLEM

Today, large quantities of heavy metals are released from marine paint used to protect ship and boat hulls from biological growth.

SOLUTION

Minute quantities of SelektopeTM effectively prevents biological growth on ship and boat hulls with minimal impact on marine life.

THE NEW GENERATION MARINE PAINT

Biological growth (fouling) in the form of slime, weed and barnacles is a major problem for ship owners. A less than perfectly smooth hull pushes up fuel consumption and CO2 emissions considerably. It is therefore imperative that technologies with the ability to prevent fouling are available. Traditionally, antifouling paint contains active chemicals and heavy metals which have proved effective but which come with an environmental price. I-Tech has developed Selektope®, an organic and synthetic compound that effectively prevents marine hard fouling whilst having a minimal effect on other marine organisms. The technology impels the barnacle larvae to swim away from the treated surface, and the barnacles are thus unable to attach. Being highly specific, the compound is required in minute concentrations in antifouling paint and the impact on surrounding life is consequently minimal.
